Delivering vital upgrades for Sydney’s expanding driverless metro network, Ascent supported UGL across 10 stations between Sydenham and Bankstown as part of the Sydney Metro Southwest – Stage 3 project.
The mechanical installation scope focused on Platform Screen Doors (PSD) and Mechanical Gap Fillers (MGFs), essential systems designed to improve passenger safety, accessibility, and station efficiency. Our teams handled every step of the platform fit-out process, including platform marking, drilling, anchoring, drive panel installation, post setting, and final alignment.
With a mix of heritage-listed sites, curved platforms, and inclined surfaces, the project presented unique logistical and design challenges. Maintaining precision was critical: all components had to be installed without encroaching into the train’s kinematic envelope.
Through a structured and safety-first approach, Ascent delivered technically complex installations that met both operational and design standards. This work forms a key part of Sydney’s future-ready, fully automated metro system.

Our challenges
WinsSuccessfully installed MGFs (Mechanical Gap Fillers) and PSDs (Platform Screen Doors) across multiple station sites under a tight program, achieving delivery with minimal disruption. Simultaneous coordination across various locations demonstrated strong logistical capability and planning efficiency. | ChallengesFaced significant challenges in sequencing installation activities across live station environments, requiring collaboration with multiple contractors and careful staging to minimise operational impact. Additional complexity arose from working within century-old infrastructure systems. |
Delivered intricate design and installation works in challenging environments, including heritage-listed and curved platforms. Teams effectively navigated spatial limitations and legacy infrastructure to meet both safety standards and aesthetic requirements. | Maintaining compliance and safety during installation on curved and inclined platforms presented unique engineering challenges. Alignment and structural adjustments required innovative approaches to ensure accuracy without compromising on performance or heritage preservation. |
